Rockin' for Roosevelt

The Heart of the Lakes Community Fundraiser – Rockin’ for Roosevelt On Saturday, July 13, from 7pm to 11pm at Santia Hall in Keego Harbor, a fundraiser will be held in support of saving the historic, 104 year old Roosevelt building from demolition. Wonderful, live music will be performed by The Good STuFF band in a loving tribute to Bugs Beddow. Bugs was the beloved, exuberant, visionary leader and trombone player in this band for many years. His talented bandmates are continuing to perform, inspired by his “Rock n’ Soul” style and passion for music. Paying tribute to Bugs, while enjoying The Good STuFF band, is perfect for the Roosevelt fundraiser. According to his widow, Kathy Beddow, Bugs loved Michigan history and he loved the historic Roosevelt building, where he taught music. “It would break his heart to see it demolished, when it can be repurposed and it’s history can live on.” Pizza, pasta and salad will be served at the event. A cash bar will be available. A silent auction, brimming with a variety of enticing items and a 50-50 raffle will take place. During band breaks, get informed with an update on the ongoing efforts to Save Roosevelt from demolition. This event is being hosted by the non- profit group The Heart of the Lakes Community. The mission of this group is to see the historic Roosevelt building sold and repurposed, instead of demolished. The building sits in the heart of the proposed, walkable downtown of Keego Harbor. Originally designed by the Fisher Brothers’ firm, later design was done by iconic architect Robert O. Derrick, who designed the Henry Ford Museum. Since the building was scheduled for demolition by the West Bloomfield School Board in a 5 to 2 vote, public outcry has been resounding and continues to grow. Around the state and beyond, people are voicing concerns over community safety risks from the cut corners proposed in the demolition, to the sheer waste in not repurposing the beautiful, solid structure. The most recent of many offers was for 2 million dollars with the building as is, to be repurposed into mixed use and housing. Thanks to the efforts of The Heart of the Lakes Community non profit, there is a delay in demolition. This crucial delay is allowing time for a solution that will benefit the whole community.
