FRIENDS OF THE ROUGE OFFERS FREE RAIN GARDEN CLASS TO HELP RESIDENTS PROTECT LOCAL WATERWAYS
Community members are invited to attend a free Rain Garden Class on Saturday, July 18, to learn how simple landscaping techniques can reduce stormwater runoff, improve local water quality and create beautiful habitats for birds and pollinators.
The class will take place on Saturday, July 18 from 11:00 am to noon at the Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn. The educational program is open to homeowners, renters, gardeners, neighborhood groups and anyone interested in protecting local water resources.
Participants will learn:
• What a rain garden is and how it works
• How rain gardens help reduce flooding and improve water quality
• How to select the right location and plants
• Design, installation and maintenance tips
• Resources available to help residents get started
Rain gardens are shallow, landscaped areas planted with native flowers, grasses and shrubs that capture and filter rainwater from roofs, driveways and other hard surfaces before it reaches storm drains and local waterways.
"Rain gardens are an attractive, practical way for residents to make a positive environmental impact right at home," said Cyndi Ross, Restoration Manager. "This class gives participants the knowledge and confidence to create a landscape that benefits both their property and the community."
