The Simpson College Music Department is honored to welcome Dr. Donghee Han to perform a free, hour-long recital as part of the String Artist Recital Series.
Iowa City-based violist Dr. Donghee Han will present a recital in collaboration with Simpson's Dr. Jin Park, pianist, on October 6th at 3:00 pm in Lekberg Hall. Dr. Han holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Viola Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa. She is the violist in the acclaimed Red Cedar Chamber Ensemble, based in Cedar Rapids. Specializing in collaboration with composers, Dr. Han has worked closely with esteemed living composers including Iowa composer Michael Kimber (US), Han-Ki Kim (Korea), and James Whitbourn (UK).
In 2022, Donghee was honored to perform the Emerging Artists Recital at the American Viola Society Festival and the 47th International Viola Congress at Columbus University in Georgia, premiering Michael Kimber’s two new works, 2020 and Quest for Solo Viola, dedicated to her. As a devotee of Kimber’s music, Dr. Han’s thesis and recording project included Kimber’s five works for solo viola and a duet piece, showcasing her commitment to expanding the viola’s repertoire.
During her recital at Simpson, Dr. Han will perform the world premiere of two pieces written for her by Korean composer Han-Ki Kim. Doraji Taryeong and Monggeum Taryeong are playful pieces based on Korean folk song tunes.
