Highlands Ranch Genealogical Society March 2026 Program - Leaping Over the Flames
Join us at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at The Highlands Ranch LDS Stake Center, 9800 Foothills Canyon Blvd #B, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129 for a presentation of “Leaping Over the Flames: Going Back in Time from 1900 to 1880 without the Ashes of the 1890 Census” by author and professional genealogist Dina Carson.
The 1890 U.S. Census was lost in a 1921 fire in Washington, D.C., and most of the records were destroyed or badly damaged. Congress later authorized their destruction in 1934, leaving a major gap in U.S. census history.
In her presentation, Dina Carson will explain how to bridge the 1880–1900 gap when the 1890 census is missing, using alternative records and creative search strategies, including:
• Expanding your search area—ancestors may have moved, changed names, or lived in places you didn’t expect
• Using substitute records—such as city directories, land deeds, marriage and death records, immigration and naturalization records, and military service records
• Leveraging surviving fragments—about 6,000 individuals’ 1890 census records remain, mostly from certain states such as New York, Ohio, and Texas
Dina Carson is a publisher, author, genealogist, photographer, and local historian. She serves as Project Director of the Boulder Pioneers Project, Quarterly Editor of BGSQ, and SLIG Coordinator for Writing and Publishing in the Digital Age.
