EPIC Diabetes Conference

The 6th annual EPIC (Empowering Patients for Individualized Care) Diabetes Conference is being held in person at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel at 1550 Court Place, Denver, Colorado, on Saturday, May 20th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (registration opens at 8:00 a.m. MDT). This yearly event brings the diabetes community together in a supportive environment to help each other in caring for people with diabetes physically and emotionally. The conference is open to anyone living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, their family members, friends, and caretakers. Tickets are $10, lunch and snacks will be provided, and participants can choose between three different tracks: adult, pediatric, and advanced. The conference is a great way to continue your diabetes education outside of appointments and learn from the nation’s top diabetes specialists through presentations and Q&A sessions. Workshops include a 15-minute presentation by the speaker(s), followed by 45 minutes for questions from attendees. Between 300 and 400 participants are expected to attend from across the Denver and Rocky Mountain regions, including Wyoming, Montana, and Utah. Vendors in diabetes-related, medical, and health-conscious businesses will also be present for participants to learn about at the conference. Jennifer Sherr, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor in Pediatrics (Endocrinology) at Yale School of Medicine, will be this year’s EPIC Keynote speaker. Dr. Sherr’s passion for the care of those with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is quite personal, as she was diagnosed in 1987. From then on, she was determined to become a pediatric endocrinologist. During medical school training, her pediatric residency, and her pediatric endocrinology fellowship, Dr. Sherr discovered the meaningful impact of clinical research. Today, Dr. Sherr is an expert in the field of diabetes technology and has worked on trials of continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery systems. Previously she worked on projects with the type 1 diabetes exchange (T1DX) and was selected as the first Junior Pediatric Faculty Member to the T1DX Steering Committee. In 2021, Dr. Sherr took on the role of lead investigator at Yale for the TrialNet consortium, a group whose purpose is to prevent the progression to stage 3 diabetes and preserve residual beta cell function in those who are newly diagnosed with this condition. As a professor in the department of pediatrics, her goal in both the clinical and research realm is to reduce the burden of living with type 1 diabetes for both her patients and herself.
