Rocky Mountain Map Society presents "The Navigation of the Colorado-X Now, and Then" with India Wood
India Wood will explore her expedition of the 1,470-mile Colorado X by comparing the goals, navigational methods, maps, and obstacles which shaped her own route and those of the 19th-century explorers Zebulon Pike, Stephen Long, and John Fremont. Their shared places include the South Platte and Arkansas rivers, Manitou Springs, South Park, Breckenridge, and the San Juan Mountains.
Wood, a Colorado local in her mid-50s, drew an X across the state map and endeavored to hike as close to the lines as possible on roads, trails, and bushwhacks. Her 1,470-mile X wiggled from the southeast to northwest corners in 2020 and northeast to southwest corners in 2022. Her love of maps began as a freshman in the Dartmouth College map room and deepened as a young dinosaur hunter and later amateur astronomer.
