Join us for this program presented by History Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Map Society. The earliest World Maps (c. 1502-1516) appear to depict the Eastern Coast of North America decades before its documented exploration. This enigma has been called “ The most baffling [cartographic] problem” of its time. (W. P. Cumming, R. A. Skelton, and D. B. Quinn). During this presentation, Don McGuirk will examine these maps in detail, present contemporary written information regarding this geography presented, and conclude by arguing that the geography presented is not North America but rather the earliest expression of an overestimated Cuba.
Don McGuirk is a retired pediatrician and a founding member of the RMMS. He has written extensively on the subject of early exploration of the New World. Now living in Kansas City, his publications can be found on the Rocky Mountain Map Society website.
