Author Talk: Lei and the Fire Goddess

Join award winning author Malia Maunakea at the Center for Colorado Women's History for an interactive presentation and exploration of her book, Lei and the Fire Goddess. This event is youth and family friendly, and books will be available for purchase through our community partner, Second Star to the Right Books. Book Description: CURSES AREN’T REAL. At least, that’s what twelve-year-old part-Hawaiian Anna Leilani Kamaʻehu thinks when she listens to her grandma’s folktales about sacred flowers and family guardians. Malia Maunakea is a Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) writer who grew up on Hawaiʻi Island and Oʻahu before relocating to the continent for college. She writes both middle-grade fiction and nonfiction. Parking: Metered street parking is available around the museum, as is lot parking which can range from $5 to $10+ dollars for the day. The closest parking garage to us is the Civic Center Cultural Complex Garage at 65 West 12th Ave. Accessibility in the Museum: Entering the museum may require the use of two ramps, one into our courtyard and one into the house. The event will take place on the first floor only. We have two single room, all-gender restrooms able to accommodate mobility devices. Our historic house has light smells, sounds, changes in lighting and uneven flooring. Some of our historic rooms are quite small, and you may have to sit very close to someone else. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own sensory soothing tools.
