Of Chaos and Order Art Collective (OCAO) chose the ideas of On the Edge of Transition for their second group project, on display at the Curtis Center for the Arts in January 2024. An edge is defined by Merriam-Webster as being the line where an object begins or ends. It is the outside limit or the place farthest away from the center of something. A transition is a change or shift, a passage, a movement. Edges can be a separation. Transitions can connect. In painting, edges might be soft or hard. They can be graphic or atmospheric. They help define shapes in a composition. Transitions create movement in a painting.
Artists have ways of working that are their individual mark and their process. These ways of working are familiar and help a viewer to recognize the artist’s paintings as a body of work. What if the artist shifts that way of working and tries a new way? Do the paintings still look like they are part of the body of work? Over the year of 2023, OCAO has explored experimenting with edges in paintings in different ways from their usual processes. This exploration has caused a transition from the familiar to the uncomfortable. Our ideas about edges have been expanded to new terrain.
