Pub Theology: “You Are Not Your Brain: Neuroscience, Addiction, and Identity”

Close out this year’s Pub Theology series on Monday, June 22 with a powerful and deeply personal conversation: “You Are Not Your Brain: Neuroscience, Addiction, and Identity,” led by The Rev. Robin H. Hinkle, Associate for Pastoral Care at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. As neuroscience continues to reveal more about how our brains function, questions of identity, free will, and human dignity come into sharper focus—especially in the context of addiction and mental health. How do we understand the relationship between brain chemistry and the soul? Where is God’s grace in the struggle for healing and wholeness? And how can faith communities respond with compassion and hope? Drawing on both theological insight and pastoral experience, the Rev. Robin Hinkle will explore the intersection of neuroscience, addiction, and identity, offering a message grounded in grace, resilience, and the truth that we are more than the sum of our biology. Pub Theology is a speaker and music series designed to engage the wider community in meaningful conversation. Each gathering offers theological, challenging, and thought-provoking discussion in a relaxed, welcoming pub environment—equally comfortable for parishioners, invited friends, and curious newcomers alike.
