Texas-born and Brooklyn-based artist Demarcus McGaughey returns to Dallas with Luminary, a deeply personal solo exhibition opening at Janette Kennedy Gallery from June 6 through July 6, 2026. Through a striking new body of mixed media portraits and figurative works, McGaughey examines visibility, protection, ancestry, and the emotional architecture of becoming seen.
Working with acrylic, pencil, and inherited fabrics from his grandmother’s quilt collection, McGaughey creates layered surfaces that merge personal history with contemporary portraiture. Each work carries traces of memory and lineage, transforming fabric into both material and metaphor. His figures appear illuminated from within, suspended between intimacy and monumentality.
At the center of Luminary is a formative lesson passed down from the artist’s father, Michael McGaughey: “You have a light inside of you, and it’s your job to protect it.” For years, McGaughey concealed that light, fearing it would be misunderstood, diminished, or taken from him. Over time, protection evolved into permission. What was once hidden became something meant to be witnessed.
The exhibition serves as both a personal reckoning and a cultural offering. Having participated in international exhibitions and residencies, McGaughey draws inspiration from encounters across geographies and communities. The works in Luminary reflect muses encountered abroad, as well as residents of Oak Cliff whose presence, style, and spirit continue to shape the artist’s visual language. Together, these portraits form a meditation on inner brilliance and collective humanity.
Within Luminary, light functions as more than a visual motif. It becomes spirit, ancestry, memory, survival, and self-recognition. McGaughey’s practice invites viewers not only to observe the figures before them, but to acknowledge the luminosity within themselves.
Presented in Downtown Dallas at Janette Kennedy Gallery, the exhibition positions McGaughey as an important voice within contemporary figurative painting, bridging fashion, storytelling, and cultural memory with emotional precision and cinematic scale.
