Lift Every Voice, Children FREE

The international award-winning Cantabella Children’s Chorus presents its family-friendly spring concert, Lift Every Voice, Saturday, May 11 at 4 pm at Valley Community Church, Pleasanton. Children are free! Cantabella will perform a well-rounded collection of music to lift every voice. Raymond Wise’s arrangement of Lift Every Voice and Sing is an upbeat crowd-pleasing piece. Well-loved Elijah Rock and Battle of Jericho are pieces by the late American composer/arranger of international renown, Moses Hogan, known for his energetic rhythms and his beautifully blended harmonies, helping to preserve African-American spirituals. Water Night is written by Eric Whitacre. It’s based on a poem by Octavio Paz who was the first poet of Latino descent to receive a Nobel Laureate for literature. A Song of Life, by Marques L. A. Garrett, is a non-idiomatic black piece, neither a spiritual or gospel song. An arrangement of Ave Maria by Black composer Mark Butler is non-idiomatic as well. Kodajay, sung in Creole, demonstrates there is a plethora of different styles in the Black composer community; Sydney Guillaume is of Haitian descent. Drew Collins’ O Frondens Virga is a beautiful setting to spiritual mystic Hildegard von Bingen’s original chant. Black female composer, Zanaida Roble, based His Eye Is on the Sparrow on a hymn but with modern jazz type harmonies. Cantabella Children’s Chorus has been invited to perform these songs on Sunday, June 23 at 11 am at the Stanford Memorial Chapel. Cantabella will then perform these wonderful works at multiple locations on a 10-day concert tour in Ireland June 23 – July 3. Cantabella Children’s Chorus won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in select competitions during the July 2023 Golden Gate International Choral Festival. Enjoy our concert, Saturday, May 11 at 4 pm, Valley Community Church, 4455 Del Valle Pkwy, Pleasanton. Tickets are $20 at www.cantabella.org/concert until a minute before midnight on May 10. Tickets rise to $25, May 11, online or at the door. Tickets are FREE for children 18 and under.
