California Native Plant Society Spring Plant Sale

The California Native Plant Society Willis L. Jepson Chapter is having a spring native plant sale. Online plant sale is April 24 - 30, 2023. Sales open early on April 22 for society members! More info. at www.jepson.cnps.org/ In person plant sale is on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the Heritage Presbyterian Church, 1400 East Second Street in Benicia from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The single most important factor in successfully gardening with native plants is to choose plants that naturally occur in your area. The plants at these semi-annual sales are grown at the Chapter's nursery in Vallejo, which follows best management practices to produce biologically clean and healthy nursery stock for its customers. All plants available at the Native Plant Sale are selected to thrive in Solano County and are posted on the Willis L. Jepson Chapter's website jepson.cnps.org. Looking for the perfect native plant for your site, CNPS partnered with the UC Berkeley Jepson Herbarium to create a powerful native plant database that helps you discover the plants best suited to your property using Calscape.org. Featured native plant - California Fuchsia (Epilobium canum `Calistoga`), a herbaceous semi-evergreen shrub with a mounding habit which spreads by rhizomes. Trumpet-shaped flowers appear in rich red-orange. Blooms in summer and fall. Pollinated by hummingbirds. Leaves are felty, oval to linear, and gray-green. Native to California, the West, and northern Mexico. This plant requires a site in partial shade to full sun with little to moderate water and enough space for a 1-2 ft high and 3-4 ft wide plant. Plant this plant with other California Natives such as California Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) and Sonoma Sage (Salvia sonomensis). View California native plants at Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanicial Garden. Visitors to this 3.5 acre garden can see examples of plants native to Solano County. Located in the Benicia State Recreation Area off the Columbus Parkway exit from I-780.
