Illustrious jazz performer, professor of music, and African American Studies, and multi-instumentalist in reeds and woodwinds, Salim Washington forms a unique quartet with local jazz artists for an extraordinary evening of music. Salim has collaborated with a panoply of leading musicians in different genres of music from John Hicks to Fred Ho and Pharoah Sanders, performing in clubs, concert halls, and festivals around the world. Joining him in this ensemble is local pianist James Washington with intriguing improvisations and original compositions, nuanced and richly harmonic vocabulary that is both clear and soulful. Another local, and SF native, will be bass player Charles Thomas, well-known player in the pop, reggae, jazz, and classical idioms. Thomas studied formally and informally various musical styles, from Fillmore blues and San Francisco acid rock/funk, to classical and jazz. The solid and expressively talented Bob Marshal on drums rounds out the jazz quartet on that Sunday evening.
