This concert of vocal solos and duets features classical accordionist Mary Ann
Covone, performing music ranging from Scarlatti’s Sonata #56 through contemporary
compositions by Karen Fremar, Astor Piazolla, and the world premiere of Recipe of Life by
Gorka Hermosa commissioned by Mary Ann for accordion and soprano voice. The program
also includes Fremar’s Introduction and Allegro for Accordion and Synthesized Tape.
Mary Ann Covone is one of a handful of classical accordionists in the United States. She
studied under the internationally acclaimed conductor and performer Joan Cochran Summers
and received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Accordion Performance from the University of
Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Since then, she has performed as a soloist and
with accordion orchestras as well as teaching extensively in the Chicago area for years. She
recently performed with the West Suburban Orchestra and the Loyola University Orchestra in
works by Shostakovich. Ms. Covone recently closed her law offices allowing her to focus on
her accordion performance and leadership as well as founding the Chicagoland Accordion
Academy. Mary Ann is the immediate past president of the Accordionists & Teachers Guild,
International (ATG), an organization that strives to promote excellence in teaching and playing
and to promote accordion playing at all levels in all genres
Anne Marie Carden is a Boston-based lyric soprano who will perform arias by Giacomo
Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi, and Antonin Dvorak as well as art songs by Joesph Marx and the
world premiere of Recipe of Life by Gorka Hermosa. She completed her Bachelor of Music
degree in Voice Performance at Lawrence University, and recently graduated with a Master of
Music degree at Boston Conservatory at Berklee studying with Kathryn Wright. She has
performed with the renowned Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Salzburg, Austria; with the
Frost School of Music at University of Miami; as well as Chicago Summer Opera. Anne
Marie’s most recent performance was Mrs. Gobineau in Menotti’s The Medium with the
Chicago Summer Opera. Anne Marie Carden is currently employed by the Boston Symphony.
For this concert Napa’s own baritone, Ben Covone, will be singing arias by Giuseppe
Verdi, Vicenzo Bellini, and Wolfang Amadeus Mozart as well as art songs by Ralph Vaughn
Williams. Following his extensive career in business, Ben Covone began seriously studying
voice at the age of 55 and is currently working with Vicky Vandewark. In recent years, Ben
performed numerous classical and Broadway solos and duets with Sing Napa Valley and was a
featured performer in a Kurt Weill retrospective last fall. He is also a frequent guest artist in the
All-Stars & Guests recitals for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Ben has
sung with many men’s choruses throughout the United States. He was a founding member of the
Oakland East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus under the baton of Dick Kramer where he also assisted in
the establishment of the non-profit organization and its federal status. Ben lends his tremendous
professional skills to the Sing Napa Valley Board of Directors as well as coordinating the benefit
salons, including this one, for Sing Napa Valley.
