Quiet Terrain Brings Contemporary California Art to Downtown Danville

Kriste Michelini Gallery is pleased to present Quiet Terrain, a contemplative group exhibition exploring stillness, materiality, and the subtle emotional landscapes that exist beneath the surface of the everyday. Featuring works by Alex Cole, Raluca Germain, and Melissa Steenport, the exhibition opens with a public reception on Thursday, January 29th, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM, at the gallery’s downtown Danville location. Curated around the theme Textures of Stillness, Quiet Terrain brings together painting, fiber, wood, and leather to create an immersive experience that invites viewers to slow down and engage with nuanced forms, organic surfaces, and restrained palettes. While each artist’s practice is distinct, the works share a common language of quietude, balance, and tactile depth. Sonoma-based painter Alex Cole presents atmospheric landscapes and abstract compositions that hover between representation and memory. Drawing inspiration from Northern California’s rolling hills and shifting light, Cole’s work distills place into layered gestures and softened forms, evoking a sense of calm and introspection rather than literal depiction. San Francisco fiber artist Raluca Germain contributes ethereal textile works that blur the boundaries between art object and environment. Using hand-dyed fibers and labor-intensive processes, Germain’s pieces emphasize repetition, restraint, and the meditative nature of making. Her work functions as both visual anchor and emotional counterpoint within the exhibition, embodying stillness through process as much as form. Completing the trio, artist/architect Melissa Steenport showcases her signature Horn Torus sculptures alongside select leather works. Crafted from bent wood and natural materials, Steenport’s pieces explore tension, balance, and circular movement. Despite their dynamic forms, the sculptures convey a grounded, almost architectural serenity, objects that command presence without demanding attention. Together, the works in Quiet Terrain reflect Kriste Michelini Gallery’s ongoing commitment to presenting contemporary artists whose practices resonate within refined residential and architectural spaces. Designed to appeal to collectors, designers, and art enthusiasts alike, the exhibition offers a moment of pause within the rhythm of daily life.
