Freedom Wonders Inside the Fantastic
OPENING RECEPTION FOR THE ARTIST: SATURDAY 11 MAY, 3-5 PM
Kolkata-born and New York-based Rina Banerjee’s shamanistic sculptures and sensuously-psychedelic paintings spin narratives about colonialism, migration, the natural environment, and the way we treat other people -- poetically tackling big global issues from the perspective of a transnational woman of color.
Her modus operandi is to reject conventional hierarchies --cultural, material, and grammatical – using a three-pronged practice. She beads, embroiders and wantonly conjoins rare antiques with trinkets mass-produced for the tourist trade, to create fetishistic assemblages. She paints, collages, gilds and marbleizes on paper, depicting women in states of ecstatic transformation. And she composes long, incantation-like titles that submerge you in the emotional atmosphere of her bedazzling world.
In her fourth solo presentation at Hosfelt Gallery, Banerjee focuses on the most basic of human rights: the right to live free from oppression; to feed your children; to live in safety; to move freely; and most importantly, to hope. This is the raison d’être of governments. When they fail their people in this regard, they are illegitimate. This is an exhibition about rejecting injustice and the hope for a re-imagined, more ethical, world order.
