The Fire that Transformed the American Workplace

On a Saturday afternoon in 1911 a cataclysmic fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Workplace conditions led to the deaths of 146 employees, mostly immigrant women and girls, some as young as 13. Many of the issues that the Triangle fire raised remain in the forefront today: immigration, women’s rights, the role of organized labor, and government regulation. Professor Gerald Henig will describe the circumstances leading to this horrific tragedy, and explain why it happened, who was responsible, and its lasting impact. Registration not required, but if you would like to receive an event reminder email, please register using the link provided. About the Speaker: Gerald S. Henig is professor emeritus of history at California State University, East Bay, where he won the Pi Kappa Delta Best Lecturer Award an unprecedented four times. He has published three books and numerous articles on American political, social, and military history. Dr. Henig’s most recent book; America's Presidents: What Your History Teacher Never Told You, was named “Best Indie Book of 2024” by Kirkus Reviews.
