Carquinez Village Presents: Learn How to Live Well with Hearing Loss

According to the Better Hearing Institute, 14.6% of baby boomers, or 1 in 6 people born between 1946 and 1964, have hearing loss. Despite the growing number of baby boomers with hearing loss, only about 25 percent of them proactively seek help. There are many technological options that can improve a hearing loss situation. Ann Thomas, an award-winning advocate for people with hearing loss, will be the featured speaker for the Carquinez Village Speaker Series at 10:30 am Thursday, June 20, 2024, at the Benicia Public Library, 150 East L St. in Benicia. Thomas wears many hats in the hearing loss community. She is president of the Hearing Loss Association of America Diablo Valley Chapter (HLAA DV) and she serves as the HLAA Brand Ambassador. She sits on the HLAA Get in the Hearing Loop and the UCSF Patient and Family Advocacy committees, to name a few. Thomas’ own journey with hearing loss began in her late forties when she discovered she was losing her hearing. Her hearing loss was progressive, and today, she has two very successful cochlear implants. She noted that hearing loss is not the end of the world; it is a new and different beginning. Her presentation will cover common misperceptions about hearing loss and technologies to help individuals stay connected and understand in various situations, including devices and applications which can be installed on smart phones. The program is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Decaffeinated coffee and doughnuts will be available The mission of the Carquinez Village is to help Benicia and Vallejo seniors to stay in their homes and to enrich their lives through connecting, supporting, and inspiring them.
