The Aspen Trio was formed over 20 years ago at the Aspen Music Festival to perform the rarely-heard string trio repertoire. The players are distinguished professors and acclaimed chamber and orchestral performers. Their program begins with Schubert’s dramatic and highly lyrical Trio in B-flat, and concludes with a six-movement Mozart Divertimento, both landmark pieces in string trio literature.
In between, they perform 20th Century works by Mieczyslaw Weinberg and Gideon Klein from Aspen String Trio’s “Remembered Voices” project, which brings to light music suppressed by the Third Reich. Weinberg’s Trio for Strings, composed in 1950, includes Jewish, gypsy and Moldavian folk themes. Klein’s String Trio from October 1944 is deeply rooted in the Eastern European folkloric tunes.
The final piece, Mozart’s Divertimento in E-flat, was his first and only work for string trio. With an abundance of invention, Mozart produced his longest chamber work, avoiding any potential tedium by varying the tempos and the formal structures of the six movements.
"Do you believe in miracles? I do, because I heard one the other night at the Music Guild concert at Daniel Recital Hall. The Aspen String Trio played Mozart’s Divertimento in E-flat, K. 563, and the piece is nothing short of miraculous." — Jim Ruggirello, Music columnist
