San Francisco International Arts Festival is pleased to present the Bay Area premiere of "King," a compelling theatrical journey that delves into the complexities of prejudice, privilege, and resilience.
Written by and starring acclaimed playwright and performer Pat Kinevane, "King" follows the story of Luther, a man from County Cork in southern Ireland named in honour of his Granny Bee Baw’s hero, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Luther's life is confined to his apartment, venturing out only for essential tasks and to transform into an Elvis impersonator on stage. Through Luther's experiences, the play navigates themes of prejudice, privilege, and the struggle for personal fulfillment.
Originally premiered in Ireland in 2023, "King" garnered critical acclaim and nominations, including for the Mental Health Foundation award, during its run at Dance Base as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Fishamble, renowned for its innovative productions, collaborates once again with Kinevane under the direction of Jim Culleton, with music by Denis Clohessy, to bring this poignant fifth solo play to the stage.
Don't miss this opportunity to experience "King," a powerful exploration of humanity and the pursuit of living a full life, as it makes its debut in the Bay Area courtesy of San Francisco International Arts Festival.
