Join the San Ramon Library and AAUW for a special author talk featuring Dr. Nia Imara, an artist, astrophysicist, and advocate for equity in STEM. Dr. Imara’s work reflects her passion for vibrant color, human connection, and storytelling. She is the first African American woman to earn a PhD in astrophysics from UC Berkeley and the founder of Onaketa, a nonprofit organization that provides free STEM tutoring to students of color. Discover how art and astronomy intersect in this inspiring presentation.

About Dr. Nia Imara, astrophysicist
Dr. Nia Imara’s scientific work deals with galactic mass, star formation, and exoplanet detection. She was the first African American woman to earn a PhD in astrophysics at UC Berkeley and was the inaugural postdoctoral fellow in the Future Faculty Leaders program at Harvard. Now a faculty member at UC Santa Cruz, her recent work includes using 3D-printed models to visualize molecular clouds.
About Nia Imara, artist
Nia is a self-taught painter whose primary medium is oil on canvas. Her work draws from a range of influences, including the black experience, literature, nature, and music.
