Sculptor Chris Mohler will host an open house, on August 15, at his Worthington studio, to showcase new sculpture created this spring and early summer. With more than one hundred pieces of sculpture in his working studio, including the new works, Mohler sees this as an immersive experience.
Guests will be enveloped by Mohler’s captivating sculpture. “There is artwork everywhere in the studio,” Mohler offered. “Guests will see, experience, and be surrounded by sculpture of all sizes. They can move around and explore each piece from different angles.”
The exhibition offers a visceral experience, stirring wonder and curiosity through the colors, textures, and intricate details of each sculpture. The abstract forms invite viewers to create their own interpretations, fostering a deeply personal connection with the artwork.
Mohler has used repurposed steel to create the new series of nine sculptures. It is a return to painted work, which was a hallmark of Mohler’s early sculpture. “I painted many of my sculptures in the ‘80s and ‘90s, but got away from it after that,” noted Mohler. “I wanted to do something different and interject some color to the world with this new work.”
Among the new sculptures to be featured in the show are the following: “Beach," a five-foot-tall piece in blue, aqua, and tan hues reminiscent of a sandy ocean coastline, with a gold flake finish. "Skittles Factory," featuring a series of pipes that are painted the colors of its namesake candy under an arch of cutout steel. “Pitcher,” also a collection of raw steel pipes with a painted handle on the back.
"I hope to spark conversation and ignite viewers’ imagination through this exhibition,” Mohler said. Guests will be able to talk to the artist and be inspired by and just experience the visual pleasure of the artwork.
The open house will take place on Thursday, August 15, from 2 to 8 pm, at Mohler Artworks studio at 529 Schrock Road, 43229.
Chris Mohler has been a professional sculptor for more than 40 years, making contemporary steel sculpture of all sizes. He attended Kent State University and Maryland Institute of Art studying sculpture. He has works in many permanent collections, including Kent State University, the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and scores of private patrons.
