Good Trees for Birds
Is a Norway Maple as good as a Red Maple? Is an Arborvitae as good as a Juniper? Is a Callery Pear as good as a Serviceberry?
If you are a Robin looking for a berry, a Cardinal with a taste for seeds, or any bird looking for a fat juicy caterpillar to feed your babies, the answer is NO. While many non-native trees can beautify our landscape, and some may provide limited wildlife services, nothing compares to our native trees and shrubs when it comes to providing food and cover for our feathered friends.
This program will identify native Ohio trees that are particularly attractive to local and migratory birds. After a short indoor presentation, participants will visit some native trees of value to birds on the grounds of the Audubon Center. These trees will have new signage that identifies them and describes their benefits to birds.
