Ian Frazier’s Paradise Bronx reveals the rich and tumultuous history of New York City’s most heterogeneous borough: the Bronx. From Jonas Bronck, who bought land from the local Native Americans, to the formerly gang-wracked South Bronx that gave birth to hip-hop, Frazier’s loving exploration is a moving tour de force about the polyglot culture that is America today. Frazier discusses the Bronx’s various waves of immigration—Irish, Italian, Jewish, African American, Caribbean, Puerto Rican—the romance of the Yankees, the disaster of the Cross Bronx Expressway, the invention of rap and hip-hop, and so much more. You will have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions after the event, meet the author, and get your books signed.
Ian Frazier is the author of Travels in Siberia, Great Plains, On the Rez, Lamentations of the Father, and Coyote v. Acme, among other works, all published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He graduated from Harvard University. A frequent contributor to The New Yorker, Ian lives in Montclair, New Jersey. Ian was the winner of The 1st Thurber Prize for American Humor in Writing in 1997 (Coyote v. Acme) and won The Thurber Prize again in 2009 for Lamentations of the Father, making him the only two-time Thurber Prize winner.
