Heights Chamber Orchestra Concert

Music Director Travis Jürgens serves as Director of Music Ministry at Saint Ambrose Catholic Parish and as Music Director of the fully professional Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra. He won 2nd Prize and the President of the Jury Award at the 2019 Bucharest Music Institute International Conducting Competition. He has collaborated with esteemed conductors, including Michael Tilson Thomas and Marin Alsop. He has been praised as “a superior conductor” and “well on his way to becoming a major conductor in the world of symphony orchestras” (Opus Colorado). Mark Kosower, Cello A modern player with a “signature sound” and distinctive style of playing, cellist Mark Kosower embodies the concept of the complete musician performing as concerto soloist with symphony orchestras, in solo recitals, and as a much admired and sought-after chamber musician. He is Principal Cello of The Cleveland Orchestra and a scholar and teacher of cello. Mark’s performance repertoire and discography are testaments to a deep devotion, not only to frequently heard repertoire but, significantly, to less well-known concertos. Mr. Kosower has appeared as soloist on five continents in addition to twenty-seven concerto performances with The Cleveland Orchestra. Joseph Haydn – Concerto in C Major Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major is one of those rare things in music: a genuine masterpiece that vanished, only to be discovered years later. In this case, it was many years later, for this music was lost for almost exactly two centuries before it was discovered in 1961. Since then, it has become a popular concerto with cellists, due to its virtuosic writing for the instrument and its bright, youthful character. Pyotr Tchaikovsky – Andante Cantabile The piece is scored for solo cello and string orchestra. The melancholic second movement, which has become famous in its own right, was based on a folk song the composer heard at his sister Aleksandra’s home whistled by a house painter. Benjamin Britten – Matinées musicales Matinées musicales is a 1941 composition by Benjamin Britten using music composed by Gioachino Rossini in and around the 1830s. The suite is a successor to Britten's earlier suite based on Rossini, Soirées musicales (1937). Alexander Borodin – Prince Igor: Polovtsian Dances Alexander Borodin’s four-act opera, Prince Igor, is based on the medieval Russian nationalistic epic, The Tale of Igor’s Campaign. It tells the story of a 12th century military campaign, launched by the Prince of Novgorod-Seversk against the Polovtsians, an invading nomadic Tartar tribe. Quickly, the campaign takes a disastrous turn, and Igor and his son, Vladimir, are taken prisoner.
