Travis Jürgens, Music Director leads the Heights Chamber Orchestra in the following program:
Dmitri Shostakovich – Chamber Symphony Op. 110a
In the summer of 1960, Shostakovich’s work on the score of a Soviet-East German film took him to Dresden. There, in a span of three days, Shostakovich composed a chamber symphony inscribed “In memory of victims of fascism and war.” The chamber symphony is played in five movements without pause. Its most important landmark, and primary building block, is a four-note theme built on an abbreviation of the composer’s name, DSCH. While the Symphony is full of extra-musical significance, exactly what it signifies is unclear.
Franz Schubert – Symphony in C Major ‘The Great’
Franz Schubert’s grandiose, swaggering C Major Symphony, is believed to be the greatest of the 19th century’s post-Beethoven symphonies. This symphony was not written at the end of his life, but at a time when things were going well for the composer. It was early in 1826 when the “Great C Major” Symphony was completed. A performance, however, had to wait until 1839, 11 years after Schubert’s death, when Mendelssohn conducted a truncated version in Leipzig. Its driving power, its dissonant harmonies, and the striking trombone coloring take it a giant step even beyond the highly original “Unfinished” Symphony No. 8 (1822).
