The success of the film Maestro has greatly renewed interest in Leonard Bernstein. The movie dealt mostly with his marriage and love life and only briefly touched on his music. However, it is for his musical genius that we remember Lenny today. This course will cover his conducting, his Broadway compositions, his “serious” compositions, and his brilliance as an educator and commentator on music. Each class will offer numerous video examples taken from concert performances, documentaries, Young People’s Concerts, and Omnibus archives. We will demonstrate why Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) is still, at 106, Mr. Music America today.
