Family History and Genealogy Open House: Our Food, Celebrations, and Stories!

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Cleveland (JGSC) and Congregation Mishkan Or (CMO) will hold their first community open house on Sunday, August 11 from 11 to 2 at CMO. Long-time Jewish Cleveland historians, Arnie Berger, PhD and Nate Arnold, will serve as honorary co-chairs and be recognized at noon. The special presentation will be led by CMO Rabbi Robert Nosanchuk, Senior Rabbi and Will & Jan Sukenik Chair in Rabbinics and Deborah Katz, JGSC President. “Through extensive research, articles, presentations, interviews, guided bus tours, a website (www.clevelandjewishhistory.net), a Facebook group (Northeast Ohio Jewish History), and hours of conversation, Nate Arnold and Dr. Arnie Berger have made significant contributions to the history of Jewish Cleveland and to our appreciation of it. Arnie and Nate have made our community the beneficiaries of their curiosity about the past, their determined pursuit of it, the hours devoted to it in their retirement, and their enthusiasm for giving back to their community,” explained Jane Rothstein, JGSC Vice President for Membership and CMO Librarian and Archivist. The honey themed program will consist of family-friendly activities, treats, and tours. Learn about bees and honey from Medina County’s Garnes Apiary, sample honey, and collect honey-based recipes. Discover Jewish Cleveland cemeteries and get help translating Hebrew gravestones and finding obituaries. Meet the creators of the Cleveland Schmooze and learn the stories of people who make up old Jewish Cleveland & best interviewing tips. Bring your family trees and pictures to connect with others and share your stories. Optional tours of the Hartzmark Art Gallery and the Maltz Museum will be offered at 1:30. A full program is available on the JGSC website. Family photos will be offered. Registration is not necessary and participation is free. Stop by anytime between 11 and 2. “We are fortunate to have a range of genealogy resources and organizations available in Northeast Ohio to meet a variety of interests and research skills,” said Katz reminding anyone interested to check for open house updates on the JGS Cleveland website.
