Using the Cleveland Jewish News as a Genealogy Resource with Bob Jacob

Program: Join us to discuss the genealogy resources available through the Cleveland Jewish News (CJN). The CJN is an award-winning, independent newspaper highly regarded worldwide. It provides the Jewish community of Northeast Ohio with a quality weekly newspaper and website (https://www.clevelandjewishnews.com/) presenting local, national and world news of Jewish interest. It was formed in 1964 as an independent successor of two privately owned Jewish newspapers in Cleveland: The Jewish Review & Observer (founded in 1889) and the Jewish Independent (founded in 1906). The CJN provides online access to more than 130 years of Jewish history in Cleveland, OH as reported by the CJN and its predecessor newspapers in the Samuel H. Miller Keeping Our Words Alive Digital Archive (https://digital.olivesoftware.com/olive/apa/clevelandjewishnewsfree/default.aspx#panel=home). It is a free digital resource including obituaries, articles, and lifecycle announcements. Search by names, dates, and key words to find family information. Speaker: Bob Jacob is the editor of the Cleveland Jewish News. His 45-year journalism career began in sports at the now-defunct Painesville Telegraph. He joined Elyria’s Chronicle-Telegram, starting in sports and rising through the ranks to the news side, where he was interim news editor, leaving after almost 20 years. From 2000-2011, Bob was news editor of the Chagrin Valley Times, Solon Times and the Geauga Times Courier. The Chagrin Valley Times was named best weekly newspaper in Ohio nine times by the Ohio Newspaper Association during his tenure. He then led the Cleveland Jewish News editorial department as managing editor starting from 2011-2023 and then as editor from January 2023. He is also the editor of the Columbus Jewish News and the Akron Jewish News. Bob is a graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and Cleveland State University and serves on the board of the American Jewish Press Association. He has won numerous individual awards for design, news writing, feature writing, obituary writing, travel writing, breaking news writing, photography, column writing and headline writing. He was inducted into the Press Club of Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame in November 2023. Registration: All participants must register. JGS Cleveland members free. Non-members $5.
