Albert Ayler was a pioneer of the free jazz movement the 1960s. He has not received the same recognition, however, as his counterparts John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders.
“Ayler’s music in his various ensembles was different in many aspects from that of these other pioneers, but Ayler saw himself as the Holy Ghost alongside Coltrane as the Father and Pharoah Sanders as the Son," writes author Richard Koloda in his book, "Holy Ghost: The Life & Death of Free Jazz Pioneer Albert Ayler."
Koloda will present Ayler’s music through video and audio excerpts and discuss how it is important as to whom he influenced and controversial as to whether he was a charlatan or a visionary.
Book signing and sales will follow the event.
