Discussion with Dr. Perri Klass: The fight against child mortality

Only one hundred years ago, in even the world’s wealthiest nations, children died in great numbers—of disease or accidents. Throughout history, culture has been shaped by these deaths; diaries and letters recorded them, and writers have written about and mourned them, including Harriet Beecher Stowe. Decreasing infant and child mortality is one of our greatest human achievements—women doctors, including Cincinnati’s own Blackwell Sisters, nurses and public health advocates have been instrumental to this trend. Join us as we discuss how and why this fundamental transformation has shaped society, culture and family life. Author Perri Klass will discuss her book on public health The Best Medicine with Miami University Professor of History and Global and Intercultural Studies Kimberly Hamblin. Perri Klass is professor of journalism and pediatrics at New York University, codirector of NYU Florence, national medical director of Reach Out and Read and a weekly columnist with The New York Times.
