Understanding the Immensity of the Cosmos

Astronomers often discuss distances in light years, or the distance light travels in a year. In fact, one light year is a whopping six trillion miles or so, or about ten-thousand-trillion years. That’s one followed by 16 zeroes! What do such large numbers even mean and how can we get a more intuitive feel for the immensity of the universe? In this talk, we will put cosmic scales into more “down-to-Earth” terms. No RSVP is needed. This event is the second talk in the Thomas More Observatory’s public lecture series. The lecture begins at 7:00 p.m., followed by observations at the Thomas More Observatory, weather permitting.
