Veteran Columbus folksinger and retired news reporter Bill Cohen takes folks back in time with a candlelit, musical, year-by-year journey through the era, with live folksongs, “news reports” and compelling photos of sixties happenings, displays of anti-war buttons and posters, and far-out sixties fashions.
Bill will also challenge the audience with fun sixties trivia questions. The program is suitable for adults and mature teens. It’s the 38th year of sixties coffeehouses for Bill. He’s performed the show more than a hundred times at colleges, churches, synagogues, conferences, high schools, and middle schools across Ohio and beyond.
This special United Church of Christ performance is being hosted in honor of Rev. Jim Egbert and in memory of John Neumaier and Karl Poetter.
In the 1970’s, UCC minister, Rev. Jim Egbert, engaged young people in social justice issues in many creative ways. He created and directed The Ohio State Fair Youth Ministry (OSFYM) Tent Show at the Ohio State Fair with a different cast each summer. It was run by the United Church of Christ Church and was open to any denomination. Bill Cohen was an important resource during those years. Greater Cincinnati Outreach and ministries developed from Rev. Egbert’s inspiration and education on the imperative of living one’s faith in action and service.
Karl Poetter and John Neumaier like many others took Jim's teachings from the Gospel to their hearts. They both were known and now remembered as people who kept a balanced life loving and serving both family and those in need. They were friends with each other and many other OSFYM who have kept in touch over the decades. Karl and John died within a week of each other in August of 2023. OSFYM friends will be present at the event.
Proceeds from the concert supports local hunger and homelessness/housing, inter-faith, advocacy, youth, LGBTQ+, and UCC service providers and partners in mission and ministry in Greater Cincinnati No. Kentucky area.
For more than 40 years, the UCC Mission Priority Board (MPB) has mobilized United Church of Christ congregations to support local mission partners in the Greater Metropolitan Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. MPB allows UCC churches to collaborate around issues and organizations that are prophetic and pastoral.
