Outer space is the final frontier beyond Earth. With a seemingly endless amount of possibilities comes enormous responsibility. Space Ethics helps us untangle the moral obligations that we have as we embark on this exploration. We begin with the basic question of, “Should we explore space?” This class will look at the big questions of ethics in space using ethical frameworks and lessons from past exploration.
Can I Eat That Alien?

Out of the many Space Ethics questions that we can explore, the question of aliens is one of the most intriguing. In this class we will discuss the moral differences between intelligent v non intelligent life, the Drake Equation, and the possibility of meeting life outside of Earth. Brush up on your sci-fi and join the conversation!
A New Martian Home

Humans have successfully made it to the Moon. In 2026, we hope to return. So what’s next? Mars! This class will look into the complexities and solutions to peacefully settling and thriving on Mars. The conversation will end with a return to our question from the first class, “Should we explore space?”
Presenter: Nicole Capella, M.A.
Nicole Capella is the Program Manager at the Cincinnati Observatory and Adjunct Faculty Member at Thomas More University where she teaches philosophy. Nicole has a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of North Texas and developed the Space Ethics course during her 10-years of experience teaching at various colleges and universities. This course is a glimpse into the issues she discusses in her college-level course (without all the reading and homework!)
