Binoculars may not be the Hubble, but they’re powerful, portable, and perfect for exploring the night sky. With both eyes working together, you get a more dynamic view than a telescope often provides—plus a wider slice of the heavens. In this workshop, we’ll share tips and tricks for getting the most out of your binoculars, from craters on the Moon to finding brighter star clusters. Bring your own pair—any size or brand—and we’ll do some sky viewing if the weather cooperates. Thinking of buying binoculars? We’ll also cover how to choose the right set for stargazing.

Dave Bosse Background:
Dave’s lifelong interest in the sky began when he observed Sputnik pass over Cincinnati in 1957. Acquiring his first small reflector telescope at age 12, Dave developed an interest in the sky, optics, binoculars and telescope optical and mechanical design. Over the next 6 decades he acquired more than a dozen telescopes and binoculars, usage of said devices, as well as knowledge of the sky and observing skills that only time can provide. Dave’s sharing of knowledge began shortly after receiving a degree in Information Processing from UC and then hiring on at the University of Cincinnati’s Information Technology Division. That kicked into a higher gear when he began a 42-year career teaching Computer Science and Astronomy courses at UC. Dave maintained this double appointment until he retired from the Department of Technology and Planning in 2006 and retired from the UC Physics Department in 2019.
Dave joined the Observatory volunteer corps in 1999, becoming a presenter and lecturer in 2000. He produced the popular “Astronomy A2Z” monthly classes at the Observatory, which ran from 2009 until 2020. He has also served two terms as president of FOTO (Friends of the Observatory) and two terms on the COC Board of Trustees.
