From Atomic Labs to Launch Pads: Ohio's Race to the Stars
Explore Southwest Ohio’s pivotal role in early space exploration and the Atomic Age, which marked groundbreaking innovations in science and technology still used today. From the invention of the nuclear battery at Mound Laboratory that are still powering deep space probes like Voyager, and will provide power for future Artemis missions to the Moon. To the Cincinnati Observatory and Dr. Paul Herget’s work, which pioneered the use of early computers for astronomical calculations that aided in trajectory calculations for the Atlas ICBM, and later the Vanguard and Mercury programs. As well as the establishment of the Observatory as the first Minor Planet Center, the official body for tracking asteroids in 1947. This presentation coincides with a new exhibit that is now open at the Observatory.
