Melvin J. Gravely II is the author of Dear White Friend: The Realities of Race, The Power of Relationships, and Our Path to Equity. Written in 2021, the book is an open, candid, and collegial series of letters to his white friends written to bring us to a better understanding and solutions on the delicate topic of race.
During the literary event, the author will facilitate a candid conversation about our strategy for dealing with the issues of race in our country and our community. Most importantly, he will discuss what’s next for Black Americans in a nation moving toward repealing any progress that has been made. We must be clear and, most importantly, transition from making a point to making a difference.

About the book Dear White Friend: The Realities of Race, The Power of Relationships, and Our Path to Equity
The book is structured around the three critical questions at the heart of the issue: First, what is really going on with race in our country? Second, why must we care? Third, what can we do about it together? The book is candid yet collegial, thought-provoking yet full of practical solutions, and direct without placing blame.
In the end, Gravely calls upon readers to ask themselves, “What’s my role in all of this?” Readers will realize their answer to his question can change everything. The book aims to provide an on-ramp for essential conversations about race with friends, community leaders, board members, business leaders, and everyone in between. Gravely is now engaging in media interviews and personal appearances to promote better race dialogue and be more intentional about our path to equity.
