The Charandas Chor is a classic Rajasthani (Indian) folk tale. Originally narrated by Mr. Vijaydan Detha, it was interpreted by legendary Padma Bhushan Habib Tanvir, using Chattishgari (Madhya Pradesh) cast members and their native language in 1975, which etched a high mark in the Indian People’s Theater movement.
Mrs. Bitan Basu, a Cincinnati local for over 25 years, is our director. A childhood theater artist, and life-long theater worker from Kolkata (West Bengal), she envisioned recreating this magical story in its original format with live music and an ensemble of theater-lovers of the South Asian community of Greater Cincinnati.
This play depicts the internal and external battles of a common but intelligent thief who must confront his self-proclaimed honesty and righteousness in a world where only compromising principles can lead to personal success.
This lively play invokes the inherent paradox in human existence, where truthful existence becomes an impossibility. The contradiction is fascinating to witness!
