The evening of Saturday, September 12 brings the popular worlds of true crime and history to the stage as acclaimed storytellers Amber Hunt and Amanda Rossmann record a live edition of their “Crimes of the Centuries” podcast. Combining historical research, compelling storytelling and the intrigue of true crime, the program will explore a fascinating local crime, its sensational ensuing trial, and the people, places and circumstances surrounding it.
Thomas McGehan, a Butler County man, became the central figure in a sensational late-19th-century murder case that stirred enormous local controversy. His trial involved allegations of violence, questions about the evidence, and strong public passions, including elements of vigilante sentiment surrounding the case. McGeehan was defended by Clement L. Vallandigham, the nationally famous Ohio lawyer and former congressman best known for his role as a prominent Copperhead during the Civil War. Vallandigham mounted a vigorous defense, but an ironic and fatal twist of fate made the McGeehan case one of Butler County’s most notorious courtroom sagas in its history.
Rather than a traditional lecture, “Hit the Record Button” offers audiences the opportunity to experience a true-crime podcast as it happens—live and in person. Hunt and Rossmann will take attendees behind the facts, examining the crime while placing it within a broader historical context. The result is an evening designed to entertain, intrigue and perhaps even change the way audiences think about the past.
This event is hosted by the Butler County Historical Society and sponsored by ASI Signage Innovations.
