Elsa Lanchester, best known today as the Bride of Frankenstein, was twice-Oscar nominated, appearing in such films as Mary Poppins, The Bishop’s Wife, Lassie Come Home, Witness for the Prosecution, Murder By Death, and scores more. She was even seen in television shows such as I Love Lucy, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Off-screen, she was married to the brilliant gay actor Charles Laughton (Witness for the Prosecution, Mutiny on the Bounty, Spartacus) for 30+ years, complicated but full of love.
SHE’S ALIVE!, heralded “A triumph! Gloriously alive!” by iconic writer Charles Busch, recreates a bawdy cabaret/nightclub act that Lanchester toured with later in life -- including some of the original ribald songs she performed -- with a dash of backstage dish about her unconventional life. Listen to Elsa sing, tell stories, and contend with internal and external forces threatening to stop the whole show in its tracks. Will she keep the monsters at bay?
At the intimate Venus Cabaret, enjoy a cocktail and an evening of old Hollywood glamor, Bride of Frankenstein-style.
Written and performed by Charlotte Booker (Born Yesterday on Broadway; Psycho Beach Party, Take Me Back, and more off-Broadway; regional credits including Denver Center Theatre, Papermill Playhouse, and Baltimore Center Stage). Onstage, Booker is joined onstage by pianist Mark Nutter (writer, 3rd Rock from the Sun, SNL, Reanimator: The Musical) and Gabe Kohlbeck as Prompter. The creative team includes director Joe Kinosian (writer/performer, Jeff Award-winning Murder for Two, Todd vs. the Titanic, podcast Let’s Start a Coup!; writer, It Came From Outer Space); stage manager Tuesday Thacker; lighting designer Eric Watkins (Raven Theatre, Theatreworks Hartford, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Dallas Opera); sound designer Dee Etti-Williams (Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre, Court Theatre, About Face Theatre); and assistant director Ama Kuwonu; and producer Aislinn Frantz (Ring of Keys, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Eugene O’Neill Theater Center).
