Algren: The City's Prophet

Twentieth-century Chicago author Nelson Algren was called the "bard of the stumblebum." He was really a prophet for our new Gilded Age, known for writing about the seamier side of life. Ernest Hemingway said he was one of America’s best novelists, behind only William Faulkner. His book, The Man With the Golden Arm was chosen for the inaugural National Book Award in 1950, followed the next year with Chicago: City on the Make. This is the first biography of Algren in 25 years. Mary Wisniewski is a Chicago journalist, writer, reporter, and editor. She was a columnist for both the Chicago Tribue and the Chicago SunTimes. She is currently an author, book and theater critic for New City, and a teacher of creative nonfiction. Free and open to the public. Donations are welcome!
