World Gay Boxing Championships

LGBTQ+ fighters and their allies are getting ready to take to the boxing ring in Chicago this summer for the World Gay Boxing Championships (WGBC), to be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, to coincide with Chicago Pride. The second World Gay Boxing Championships is spearheaded by two LGBTQ+ trailblazers, founder Martin Stark and Out100 fighter Diego La Valle Cevallos-Garzon bringing the unifying power of boxing to one of the largest and most popular pride events in the United States. With the first event of its kind held last year as part of Sydney World Pride, the World Gay Boxing Championships promises to be an electrifying disruption to homophobia in combat sports; something that has never been needed more than now with the recent controversies regarding homophobic slurs in the sports of UFC and boxing. The World Gay Boxing Championships will this year be held at Strong Hands Gym, which proudly bills itself as the first LGBTQ+ gym in Chicago. This groundbreaking exhibition showcasing the best of boxing talent from the LGBTQ+ community will kick off at 1 pm on Thursday, June 20, and will feature a fabulous host, and inspirational DJ. After the event concludes at 5pm, head to the after-party at Chicago’s famous Kit Kat Lounge and Super Club. Owner of String Hands Gym Diego Cevallos-Garzon featured in this year's Out 100 list, the longest-standing large-scale list recognizing LGBTQ+ people for their achievements, accomplishments, and impact on culture and society. Diego is a Black gay man who has won over 111 amateur fights and nationally ranked 19th. He created a safe space for people across a spectrum of marginalized identities, including LGBTQ+ people, disabled individuals, and people of colour. World Gay Boxing Championships founder Martin Stark delivered the world's first boxing competition for the LGBTQ+ community and allies as part of last February's Sydney World Pride. Cevallos-Garzon and Stark have organised this year’s event to inspire positive change in boxing and get more rainbow people involved in the sport, whether that be as participants or fans.
