The VIP Reception will begin at 12PM Noon, where Luncheon attendees can meet and greet the Class of 2024 Honorees. The music for the VIP Reception will be provided by the Billy Foster Trio featuring jazz/gospel vocalist, Renee' Miles-Foster. The Billy Foster Trio will be performing some of the most popular jazz tunes by jazz greats, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington.
The Public Service Awards Luncheon will feature the Class of 2024 Honorees: The Honorable Brandon Johnson, Mayor, City of Chicago, Illinois; Attorney Shontrai D. Irving, 39th President, Lake County, Indiana Bar Association; Dr. Valerie McCray, the first African-American- male or female to qualify to run for the United States Senate in the history of the State of Indiana; Jazz pianist, composer, and producer, Billy Foster; Jazz/gospel vocalist, Renee' Miles-Foster; Tamie Dixon-Tatum, the first African-American female to run for Governor in the history of the State of Indiana; and Attorney Haneefah Khaaliq, the first African-American male or female to run for the U.S. Senate in the history of the State of Indiana.
The winners of both the Katie Hall Educational Foundation's Harriet Tubman Essay Contest for grades 3-5 and grades 6-8 and the Attorney Charles H. Hamilton Essay Award for grades 9-12 will be announced as well.
Some of the previous recipients of the Katie Hall Public Service Award are: U.S. President Ronald Reagan (posthumous); Former Gary, Indiana Mayors- Richard G. Hatcher and Karen freeman-Wilson; Eric J. Holcomb, Governor, State of Indiana; Christina Shutt, Executive Director, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum; U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-IN); U.S. Senator Richard G. Lugar (R-IN); U.S. Senator Edward Moore Kennedy (D-MA)(posthumous); Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Lee Hamilton; Author Margot Shetterly; Rev.- Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO, The King Center; and Billionaire Trial Attorney Willie E. Gary.
U.S. Representative Katie Hall (D-IN-1) was the first African-American- male or female elected to the United States Congress from the State of Indiana. In 1983, as a freshmen legislator, she authored and sponsored House of Representatives Bill, H.R. 3706, commonly known as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Law. This federal legislation designates the third Monday in January as a National Holiday in honor of the birthday of Rev.-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed "The King Bill" on Wednesday, November 2, 1983, at The White House.
Today, according to The King Center in Atlanta, "The King National Holiday" is celebrated by millions of Americans, and in some form, in more than 100 countries around the world.
Admission is $100.00 per person. This fee includes both the VIP Reception and Luncheon.
