Learn history & break bread with great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells @ St. Paul & the Redeemer
Michelle Duster, public historian and great-granddaughter of journalist and abolitionist Ida B. Wells, to be Black History Month Speaker at St. Paul & the Redeemer Episcopal Church - Hyde Park, Chicago.
(Hyde Park, Chicago) St. Paul & the Redeemer Episcopal Church in Hyde Park presents Michelle Duster, author, educator, historian, and civil rights activist, as its Black History Month speaker at 1:30 pm, Sunday, February 18, 2024. Ms. Duster will offer her unique perspective on how the work and legacy of her great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells, continues to inform and shape America’s political culture.
“February marks the celebration of Black History Month, honoring the achievements, contributions, and struggles of African Americans throughout history. It is a time of reflection, appreciation, and education for our community,” says the Reverend Catherine E. Healy, Rector. “We believe that providing an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations and hear inspiring stories is crucial in fostering understanding and unity.”
The broader community is invited to the celebration, which will be streamed live via YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/SPRChicago. A reception featuring a taste of traditional African American Soul Food cuisine prepared by Pearl’s Place Restaurant in Chicago’s historic Bronzeville community, will immediately follow the presentation (in the lower level Parish Hall). SPR is located at 4945 S Dorchester Ave. Ample free off-street parking is available. All are welcome to participate in both the BHM celebration and worship services [8:00 am and 10:00 am].

Michelle Duster is an author, professor, public historian, and civil rights activist. She is known for her work to preserve the legacy of her great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells. In a career that has spanned over 30 years, Ms. Duster has focused on highlighting, celebrating, and documenting the contributions of African Americans and women to the United States.
