Wells, to be Black History Month Speaker at St. Paul & the Redeemer Episcopal Church - Hyde Park, Chicago (Hyde Park, Chicago) St. Paul & the Redeemer Episcopal Church in Hyde Park presents Michelle Duster, author, educator, historian, and civil rights activist, as its Black History Month speaker at 1:30 pm, Sunday, February 18, 2024. Ms. Duster will offer her unique perspective on how the work and legacy of her great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells, continues to inform and shape America’s political culture. “February marks the celebration of Black History Month, honoring the achievements, contributions, and struggles of African Americans throughout history. It is a time of reflection, appreciation, and education for our community,” says the Reverend Catherine E. Healy, Rector. “We believe that providing an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations and hear inspiring stories is crucial in fostering understanding and unity.” The broader community is invited to the celebration, which will be streamed live via YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/SPRChicago. A reception featuring a taste of traditional African American Soul Food cuisine prepared by Bronzeville's historic Pearl's Place restaurant will immediately follow the presentation (in the lower level Parish Hall). It’s requested that guests RSVP via: sprchicago.org/black-history-month-rsvp. SPR is located at 4945 S Dorchester Ave. Ample free off-street parking is available. All are welcome to participate in the BHM celebration and worship services [8:00 am and 10:00 am]. Jo Ann Roberts, Ph.D., and SPR 2024 BHM Chair, says, “We are delighted to welcome all to our celebration to learn more about Ida B. Wells, the Richard Hunt-designed Bronzeville monument created to honor her legacy, and how we might follow her courageous example in creating a world we desire.” About Michelle Duster Michelle Duster is an author, professor, public historian, and civil rights activist. All are welcome to join our open table Eucharist shared at both worship services. Our anti-racism working group (ARWG) coordinates church wide efforts to live into our anti-racism vision statement: We strive to become a beloved community that reflects on our own racial identities and recognizes racism and privilege in our church and society; works for justice by building relationships and sustained efforts to heal, reconcile, and seek Christ in each other; and acts to interrupt and dismantle white supremacist structures, transforming ourselves and our church to become a living embodiment of justice and peace.
