Sustainability in Practice

Sustainability in Practice is a one-day conference exploring how architects are advancing low-carbon, high-impact design across scales and typologies. Hosted by Architectural Record in collaboration with the Illinois Institute of Technology, the event convenes leading voices in sustainable architecture for a day of design-driven dialogue and actionable insight. The program centers on real-world strategies for integrating sustainability into the built environment—from carbon reduction and adaptive reuse to material lifecycle innovation and biophilic urbanism. Case studies will showcase recent work that prioritizes performance, context, and resilience. Discussions will address both the immediate design decisions and the larger systems shaping sustainability in practice today. Jeanne Gang, FAIA, will deliver the keynote presentation, offering a firsthand look at Studio Gang’s approach to regenerative architecture. Her session will feature projects like Populus in Denver, a hotel that eliminates traditional parking levels in favor of transit-forward infrastructure and a green roof that supports pollinators and local biodiversity. Other speakers include London-based architects Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke, whose work explores material reuse at civic and cultural scales, and IIT professor Dillon Pranger, who will examine localized approaches to sustainability through small-footprint, high-efficiency projects that prioritize material ethics and contextual sensitivity. Sustainability in Practice is designed for professionals who want to deepen their understanding of sustainable design while engaging with a community committed to driving change. Attendees will gain insight into scalable solutions, regionalist strategies, and the practical intersections of design, policy, and performance. The event will also include networking breaks and sponsored educational sessions offering product-based knowledge grounded in continuing education standards.
