Brazilian heat on a winter’s evening! Every “Donovan’s Garage” show brings its audience a fresh perspective on the world of jazz. The one constant is guitarist Donovan Mixon who draws upon his friendships with many of the Chicago region’s top players to make each show unique. The January event will explore the rhythms of Brazilian jazz, featuring a quintet with artistic roots in South America who call Chicago home. Mixon describes the “Donovan’s Garage” experience as “a performance laboratory in which artists collaborate live on stage to execute spontaneous improvisations of known and original work.” See why the “Donovan’s Garage” experience was one of the Evanston RoundTable’s top ten most read stories of 2023. You may recall the hugely popular summer jazz concerts in Mixon’s Evanston alley that gave rise to the “Donovan’s Garage” shows that have a winter home in a terrific–and unusual–venue, the Second Church of Christ Scientist on Hurd Avenue in Northwest Evanston. Evanstonian Steve Rogers purchased the church last summer and while there are still Sunday services there, Rogers has made it available as a performing space for Black artists. Read the story, rooted in social justice, of how Rogers came to own a church. https://shorturl.at/hEILU
