Simultaneous Reading of the Declaration of Independence

In recognition of our nation’s 250th anniversary, Oak Park River Forest Museum has planned a gathering on Wednesday, July 8, in Scoville Park to participate in the simultaneous reading of the Declaration of Independence which will take place in communities across the United States and its territories. More than a dozen community organizations and officials in Oak Park and River Forest will take part in the reading of the Declaration. July 8 marks the 250th anniversary of when the Declaration was first read in public. Among the readers will be representatives from both village governments, the Park District of Oak Park, the League of Women Voters, Community of Congregations and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Residents are invited to gather at Scoville Park, on the corner of Lake Street and Oak Park Avenue, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The reading will begin at 5 p.m. sharp. In addition to the reading, OPRF Museum will have an enlarged copy of the Declaration for visitors to sign with a quill pen. The Oak Park Public Library will have its Book Bike there, bringing a range of titles about history, civics and more. Uncle Sam may even make an appearance. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Nineteenth Century Club, 178 Forest Ave., Oak Park. Attendees are encouraged after the event to enjoy dinner in the Hemingway District, where local restaurants continue to appreciate community support during ongoing road construction.
