Ever since I became aware of what happened to the Jews during the Holocaust—as a young Jewish art student in the generally disinterested, if not antisemitic, gentile environment of a university in central Illinois at the end of World War II—I have been disturbed by the problem of how an artist can give form to the horror of the Holocaust without trivializing it. From 1967 to 1979, I attempted to confront some of these issues in paintings and drawings. —Leo Segedin
From 1967 to 1979, artist Leopold Segedin attempted to depict his thoughts regarding the Holocaust in a series of paintings and drawings called The Holocaust Series. With imagery culled from the Vietnam War and from the 1968 Democratic Nation Convention, these works are presented are the most political and controversial of his seventy-five year career as an artist. Many of these important paintings have not been exhibited since the early 1970s.
